Bieszczady’s Atlantis – What’s Worth Seeing in the Bieszczady Mountains?

The San originates in the Bieszczady region, where it flows through nearly pristine areas. Here you can discover forgotten villages, old cemeteries, and the ruins of Orthodox churches – a landscape as mysterious as a mythical lost Atlantis. This part of the San Valley is one of the few places in Poland worth visiting if you’re looking for trails free of crowds. To kayak in this region, a permit is required, but hiking is open to all. This area also serves as a great base for trekking in the Bieszczady Mountains. Check out the recommended trails.

Secrets of the Underwater World

You can begin your kayaking journey on the San from Zwierzyń, heading towards Lesko and then continuing almost the entire length of the river to its mouth. Along the way, you’ll encounter not only picturesque landscapes but also rich wildlife. The river is home to brown trout, grayling, and the lesser-known but equally fascinating freshwater “pigfish.” Despite their name, these fish are not pigs, but rather species with uniquely beak-like lips. They sift through the riverbed in search of food, moving in a way that resembles a gentle dance. For anglers and nature lovers, seeing these creatures in their natural habitat is a real treat. The San’s clear waters let you spot their silvery scales shimmering in the sunlight. It's a paradise for fishing enthusiasts and anyone curious about Poland’s natural wonders.

Mysterious Bogs and Carnivorous Plants

Near Przemyśl, the river takes kayakers through wild meadows and marshy peatlands. Along these banks, one can encounter one of nature’s most fascinating wonders – the round-leaved sundew. This innocent-looking plant is actually a ruthless predator. Its leaves are covered with a sticky substance that lures and traps insects. When a fly or mosquito lands on its surface, the sundew slowly wraps its leaves around the prey, digesting it with enzymes. It’s incredible how such a delicate-looking plant hides such a brutal secret. The San has witnessed this silent battle for survival for centuries – yet another reason to explore Podkarpacie and discover its hidden gems.

A Meeting with the King of the Skies

Further down the river, dense forests line the San’s banks. This is where white-tailed eagles – the largest eagles in Poland – reign. From high above, they scan the area for prey. If you're lucky, you might spot one diving at incredible speed, wings spread wide, to snatch a fish in its powerful talons. Watching this majestic bird in action is a breathtaking experience. The eagle is a symbol of strength and freedom for good reason – once you witness it in flight, it's easy to understand why it commands such awe. Natural wonders like this make the San Valley one of the most interesting places in Poland for a weekend getaway – and beyond.

Clever Butterflies and Gullible Ants

One of the valley’s most extraordinary inhabitants is the large blue butterfly (Phengaris arion). Its life cycle is full of surprising twists. The caterpillars use a clever survival tactic – they mimic ant larvae! When a young caterpillar falls to the ground, it releases a chemical that ants mistake for the scent of their own young. The ants then carry the caterpillar into their nest, feeding it as if it were one of their own. Unbeknownst to them, they're nurturing a future butterfly, which eventually emerges and leaves the ant colony behind, taking nothing with it.
