Let us introduce the largest outdoor museum in Europe. Crossing the entrance gate, you will be transported to a 20th-century Galician market, which is an absolute must-see during a visit to Bieszczady. You will find here replicas of wooden houses from various Podkarpackie towns, equipped with furniture and objects that our grandparents used a century ago.
Time Travel in the Bieszczady
Each building takes a closer look at the specifics of the work and life of each profession. The smell of freshly baked bread will lead you to the bakery, where you can watch the baker work and buy fresh traditional bread. You can also learn about the work of e.g. a watchmaker, carpenter, barber shop.
Heading deeper into the open-air museum, you will see residential and farm buildings as well as religious structures: The 17th-century church, two 18th-century Boyko Orthodox churches, a magnificent Lemko Orthodox church from the early 19th century, and a replica of a wooden synagogue from Połaniec, totaling more than 180 objects. Each of these elements is a testament to the rich history and culture of the region, making them an essential point on the map of places worth seeing in the Bieszczady.
A special gem in this collection is the wooden synagogue from Połaniec, which is located within the Galician Market. The interior furnishings were reconstructed on the basis of archival documentation of the Połaniec synagogue (bimah, choirs, staircase and aron ha-kodesh podium), supplemented with relics and completed with copies of equipment from selected examples taken from archival iconographic documentation of synagogue interiors.
The open-air museum hosts an antique fair, where everyone will find something for themselves. Appointments for museum lessons carried out in facilities within the open-air museum are available. They are adapted to holidays that fall during the calendar year and to the daily work that accompanied the residents of towns and villages. Each of these elements is a testament to the rich history and culture of the region, making them an essential point on the map of places worth seeing in the Bieszczady.
