CHIC, BEAUTY AND MYSTERY - THE CASTLE IN BARANÓW SANDOMIERSKI

Magnate chic, top-notch architecture, riddles of history and soothing nature - such a mosaic of experiencesis waiting for those who visit the castle in Baranów Sandomierski

The castle in Baranów Sandomierski, built at the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries, has lost nothing of its late Renaissance character despite numerous reconstructions. Surrounded by beautiful gardens in English (behind the park's terrace), French (in front of the castle hotel), and Italian (in the western part of the park) styles, the residence is referred to as a small Wawel Castle by connoisseurs because of common features in the building itself as well as the decoration of the halls with the seat of kings.

Leszczynski Family Castle

Castle is located on the site of a medieval defensive knight's manor. It is a pearl of Polish 16th-century architecture, a work attributed to the workshop of Italian architect Santi Gucci. The castle is built on a rectangular plan, with cylindrical towers at its corners, and a staircase leading to a beautiful courtyard located at floor level.

Get back in time

It is this staircase that is confusingly reminiscent of the staircase found in Wawel Castle. It is a distinctive place because it will remind fans of old Polish cinema of a certain scene. Those who watched the series „Czarne chmury” / "Black Clouds" surely remember when Anna Ostrowska (played by Elzbieta Starostecka) waves there to Colonel Krzysztof Dowgird (Leonard Pietraszak). Undoubtedly, walking through the cloisters of the castle, we can get back in time.

Artistic sensations, on the other hand, are experienced while standing in front of a painting by Jacek Malczewski in the main altar of the castle's Art Nouveau chapel. Stained glass windows from the studio of Józef Mehoffer can be found there. Art connoisseurs will certainly appreciate the exhibitions held here in several chambers, including: the Portrait Room (images of Polish kings) and the Gallery Tylmanowska (rich stucco and paintings depicting panoramas of Italian cities).

"Little Wawel"

History mystery trackers will also find their way to the castle. After all, by visiting "little Wawel" and using goggles with VR technology (you can collect them at the reception of the castle), you will get the chance to find an underground tunnel that, according to legend, leads from the castle to Sandomierz itself. It is worth knowing that the fortification system of the castle in the mid-18th century consisted of a broken line of ramparts, redans and corner bastions with a total length of more than 1 kilometer!

Italian Garden

For those looking for a rather soothing slow life, we recommend the castle gardens. The castle was surrounded by an Italian garden designed by Gerard Ciołek. It is worth taking advantage of the healing power of trees - especially the oldest ones. One of the most interesting specimens is the American tulip tree, which, like its related magnolias, is considered one of the world's most beautiful ornamental trees. Proponents of sylvotherapy advise leaning the forehead against the bark of a tree or simply sitting under it. If the space under the tulip tree is taken, look for an almost equally aged fir tree growing in this beautiful park. Both specimens are natural monuments.

In addition to its museum function, the castle complex also operates as a hotel. For more information on events, stays and the tour itself, visit:
