Foundations of the Ossoliński family estate date back to the late 14th century. In 1522, the castle was acquired by the Tarnowski family and in the 18th remodelled in an early Baroque style; it received  bastion fortifications and a moat. Regrettably, the castle was ravaged during the War of 1809, but after 1830 it was rebuilt in a Neo-Gothic style by the Italian architect Franciszek Maria Lanci. On this occasion a landscaped park replaced the earlier Italian- style garden. The castle housed the famous Dzikovia art collection acquired by Waleria and Jan Feliks Tarnowski and a rich library, with such treasures as The Chronicle by Gallus Anonymous and the manuscript of Pan Tadeusz by Adam Mickiewicz. In 1927, the castle was destroyed by fire and rebuilt during 1928-1929 to a design by professor and architect, Wacław Krzyżanowski, who restored the early Baroque features.
