In the town you can visit the Museum of Polish Barge Transport, which recounts the history of bargemen from Ulanów. Its location on a river bank determined the function of the town which from the 16th until the 20th century was the capital of Polish barge transport

Ulanów

how to get there

It was here that barges, or the so called “galar” vessels were built and repaired. Bargemen from here operated cargo vessels not only along the San and Vistula, but also on other Polish rivers. They transported various kinds of goods (mainly lumber) to Gdańsk where the cargo was sold to Polish and foreign merchants. Interestingly, after they reached Gdańsk in their barges or rafts, they would return from the seaside to Ulanów on foot, carrying attractive gifts. These traditions are revived in the summer, when “barge trips” are organized here. The wooden flat-bottom vessel used on this occasion is modelled after the historical Ulanów-style galar barges.

A notable landmark here, the wooden church of St. John the Baptist, from 1643, inside features unique polychrome decoration on canvass, which covers the walls and ceiling of the original building, creating an illusion that the church is a brick building.
