DISCOVER ANCIENT MOSES

"And how do you like it?" With these words, Hirsch Lifschütz addressed Tadeusz Prot in the LIBE radio play, who replied: "It's impressive." We are talking about the Lifschütz-owned "Alko" premium liquor factory.

Rzeszów, called at the turn of the 20th century the Moses City hides many places connected with the rich history of the Jews who used to live here. One of them is the Hirsch distillery. In the 20’s of the 20th century a tenement house at Market Square 25 housed a manufactory, which produced exquisite liqueurs, rosolys or high-class cognacs. Near the Market Square, at the corner of today's Kosciuszki and Słowackiego Street, there was a place known to every inhabitant of Rzeszów who loved entertainment - a hotel with the only ballroom in the city called Luftmaszyn ("the blower").

On the "Heritage of Rzeszow's Jews" route you will find many other places where you can discover the forgotten past. With the help of SPACERNIK RZESZOWSKI designed for self-guided tours, you will go on a journey in time and space, to places hiding unusual stories of people and events. You will also learn where the religious school for Jewish boys Talmud Torah used to be located, and where the representatives of the Jewish community board - the kehillah - used to hold office. And why the Fred Zinnemann’s mural can be admired in Rzeszów?

In turn, to feel the Hasidic, mystical atmosphere, Łańcut near Rzeszów is a must-see spot on your journey. Although famous for its magnate's residence, it also hides the world of old-time Hasidic life. The so-called holy tzaddik Yaakov Yitzchak Horowitz lived and studied Torah in the unique Baroque synagogue, in the Lublin Hall. "The Saint" had the ability to read what was happening in a distant place and time. Noteworthy in the sacred part of the temple is the architectural bimah, which is unique in Europe. However, it is not only its architectural function that makes the synagogue unique. If you look closely among the colorful paintings you will find human images forbidden in Jewish sacred art. Find out for yourself how the creator presented the characters of Adam and Eve or Cain and Abel.

Speaking of Polish Jews, one cannot fail to mention the Shoah (Holocaust) and the attempt at survival that Podkarpackie Jews had to make during the Nazi occupation. This topic will be brought to you by the Ulma Museum in Markowa, where you will learn how residents of the Podkarpacie region and all of Poland tried to save their neighbors from inevitable death.
