IN THE POTTERY REGION - MEDYNIA Pottery Center

"In my wildest imagination, I did not expect something so unusual (...) peasants at work and at prayer, statues of saints, biblical scenes, Polish national heroes, not to mention birds, whistles and flowers.(...) I had the feeling of being in another world." This is what Christine Rickards-Rostworowska writes in her book about the work of Medynia artist Władysława Prucnal.

You will get to know the figure and work of the almost iconic clay sculptor at the MEDYNIA Pottery Center near Rzeszów. In a place where the past intersects with the present.

Having passed through the ticket office and, at the same time, a pottery store, we get to a "pottery village", where we see wooden huts that preserve the memory of people's lives in what was once Poland's largest pottery district. Visiting a wooden hut from the 19th century, we can discover how the potters lived and worked, what objects and furniture they used, and where they slept.  This is just a starter whilst we dive into the art world of this extincting profession.

In the modern, glass-walled interior of the exhibition hall, we visit a chronological exhibition of Medynia pottery, where, in addition to traditional jugs or bowls, we can admire designer grey rocks. Also impressive is a large kiln for firing pottery and a 3D ceramic model in front of the hall depicting the Medynia pottery basin, where...we can walk around, as it is solidly glazed.

The contemporary brick building also houses a large studio. Senior masters who learned the craft by working in their fathers' workshops work here, as well as young pottery enthusiasts with heads full of ideas. It is here that we can try our hand at pottery. Taking part in the group workshop, you will refine your own clay vessel on the potter's wheel with the help of the potter, and make your own clay figurine. You can take your creations home as souvenirs. When you choose an individual workshop the potter will be able to spend more time with you, and you can ask them all your questions about Medynia and pottery techniques. The finale of this class will be to make a dish according to your own idea!

Near the resort there are two remarkable places that can be visited with a guide; Władysława Prucnal's Ceramic Sculpture Gallery, with an impressive collection of more than a thousand clay figures. Next to it, in the church you can admire the amazing ceramic mosaics made by the local community of potters.
