The oil excavation plant in Bóbrka was opened in 1854 as the first one in the world. Today we can still see an obelisk set up by Ignacy Łukasiewicz in 1872 to commemorate this event
During 1854-1880 sixty oil wells were manually drilled here, some of them going down to the depth of 150m. Two of those - Franek and Janina, created in 1860, are still in operation today.
Museum of Oil and Gas Industry located in the picturesque area among forests, is opened for visitors. It is the only museum functioning in an area of an operating oil excavation plant. There are collections of Ignacy Łukasiewicz memorabilia, as well as photographs and documents related to oil, its excavation, processing and exploitation. In an area of about 20 hectares there is an exposition linked with oil drilling. Among the most interesting relics are oil wells from the 1860s which today are still in operation. You can also see tools and machines once used in the plant; these are displayed along with contemporary equipment, this way you can follow the history of oil industry, from the start until now.
