The origins of the sanctuary are connected with the cult of the Weeping Virgin, Our Lady Reconciler of Sinners, following the revelation of La Salette. The Missionaries of La Salette, a congregation formed after the events in France, came to Poland in the early 20th century and in 1910 started building the monastery in Dębowiec, today called Polish La Salette. The existing church and chapel were built in the second half of the 20th century whereas the Calvary of La Salette dates from 1929. A side chapel holds a figure of the Weeping Virgin, believed to be a miracle maker, as evidenced by numerous pilgrimages and ex-votos; the figure was crowned in 1996. In Dębowiec there are also relics of the apostles and over 50 saints.
