Roztocze – a Mushroom Picker’s Eldorado

Autumn in Eastern Roztocze is the time when forests come alive, and the air is filled with the scent of moss, pine needles, and… fresh mushrooms. Here, in one of the most picturesque corners of Podkarpackie, mushroom picking takes on a special character – combining relaxation, closeness to nature, and the delicious rewards of woodland walks.

The Best Mushroom Picking Spots in Eastern Roztocze

Eastern Roztocze is a region where mixed forests – pines, oaks, beeches, and birches – create perfect conditions for the growth of many mushroom species. As soon as the first autumn chills arrive and morning dew covers the forest floor, mushroom pickers head into the woods with baskets and knives. That’s the signal: the best season for porcini, red-capped scaber stalks, chanterelles, bay boletes, saffron milk caps, penny buns, and other forest delicacies has begun.

Although every experienced mushroom picker has their secrets and rarely reveals their best spots, there are several well-known and proven areas of Eastern Roztocze that are considered true mushroom havens:

Forests of Horyniec-Zdrój Commune – Horyniec is not only a famous spa town but also the site of the annual Mushroom Picking King contest (this year held on October 12). Participants set off from Polanka Agritourism in Polanka Horyniecka, which makes an excellent base for both beginners and seasoned mushroom hunters.

Nowe Brusno – “Kierniczki” Nature Reserve – located north of Polanka Horyniecka. While there, it’s worth visiting the historic wooden church of St. Paraskeva.

Ruda Różaniecka – the area around this village is one of the most cherished by local mushroom pickers. Dense forests and numerous valleys foster abundant mushroom growth. The village also boasts Roztocze’s cultural treasures: the Brunicki and Wattman family palace and park complex with its Neo-Baroque palace. Although the building is not open to visitors, it still impresses with its architecture and surrounding park.

Werchrata – a scenic village surrounded by deep forests hiding many mushroom surprises. Nearby, one can also see a mysterious giant boulder hidden in the woods near the Polish-Ukrainian border.

Łówcza – perfect for those who value peace and quiet. Here you can enjoy mushroom picking far from the crowds. Don’t miss the former Greek Catholic church of St. Paraskeva.

Remember that mushrooms are best picked early in the morning, when they are still fresh, firm, and covered with morning dew. Damp valleys, stream banks, and natural hollows are also good places to look – mushrooms thrive there.

Mushroom Picking Responsibly

Mushroom picking is not only a pleasure but also a responsibility. It’s worth bringing a mushroom atlas or mobile app, and above all – collecting only species you know for sure. Let’s respect nature: don’t destroy young mushrooms, don’t litter, and don’t disturb the forest floor.

Back Home – a Feast!

Collected mushrooms are a true culinary treasure. They can be dried, pickled, fried, or added to soups, sauces, and traditional dishes – from bigos and dumplings to festive roasts stuffed with aromatic mushroom filling. The taste of mushrooms from Roztocze is the very essence of autumn.

In Eastern Roztocze, you can also try unique dishes inspired by local tradition and produce. At Kresowa Osada in Basznia Dolna, you can taste goose dumplings based on a signature recipe, served with porcini mushrooms fried in clarified butter – a perfect blend of Old Polish flavors and culinary creativity. Meanwhile, at Dębowy Dwór in Ruda Różaniecka, by the scenic ponds, carp reigns supreme – especially in the form of dumplings stuffed with fish, topped with butter and mushrooms, and served at the inn “Pod Szczęśliwym Karpiem”. Both places combine regional cuisine with hospitality and attractions, creating unforgettable culinary experiences.

An Unforgettable Atmosphere

Mushroom picking in Eastern Roztocze is more than just gathering mushrooms. It’s moments of peace among the rustling trees, opportunities for family trips, conversations with fellow mushroom pickers met along the way, and – if you’re lucky – gaining valuable tips on “secret spots.” While locals are rarely eager to reveal them, it’s always worth asking around – sometimes they point you in the right direction.
