WHY VISIT THE ULMA FAMILY MUSEUM IN MARKOWA?

The museum is located away from urban hustle and bustle, in the village of Markowa. The building, resembling a traditional rural house, blends perfectly into the surrounding landscape. Raw, industrial materials used correspond well with the theme of the German occupation era and the portrayed dramatic choices faced by Jews condemned to extermination and the Poles who, at the risk of their own lives, decided to help them.

What can be seen at the Museum?

  • Garden of Remembrance - dedicated to Polish Righteous Among the Nations with a monument commemorating the Ulma Family. This place is an analogy to the Garden of the Righteous at the Yad Vashem Institute in Jerusalem and a reference to Józef Ulma's passion for horticulture.

  • Plaza in front of the Museum - adorned with illuminated glass plaques bearing the names of the inhabitants of Podkarpacie who paid with their lives for aiding Jews. At the center of the square is a plaque inscribed in memory of all Holocaust victims and their anonymous helpers.

  • Wall of Remembrance - featuring stone tablets inscribed with the names of Poles from present-day Podkarpacie who rescued Jews, including the Righteous Among the Nations.

  • Exhibition - the dimly lit interior houses a multimedia and interactive display narrated in Polish, English, and Hebrew. At the heart of the exhibition is an illuminated glass cuboid - a model reflecting the Ulma family home. Temporary exhibitions from various perspectives related to the multifaceted theme of Poles rescuing Jews complement this display.
