THROUGH THE TRACKS ACROSS THE BIESZCZADY: THE HISTORY OF THE FOREST train

The history of the Bieszczady Forest Trainbegan at the end of the 19th century when, in response to the growing popularity of this economical means of transport in mountainous areas, its first section from Nowy Łupków to Cisna was built. Its main role was to transport wood, which was then distributed throughout the Austro-Hungarian Empire via the Łupków–Przemyśl line.

The difficult period of both World Wars, when the railway was used by the military, led to its devastation. Renewal came with the establishment of the Wood Industry Plant in Rzepedź in the 1950s and 60s, when the railway began to function again, transporting wood and passengers.

The systemic changes in 1989 brought difficulties, as the timber industry became unprofitable. Fortunately, thanks to the enthusiasts grouped around the Forest Railway Foundation, since 1997 the railway has gained a new life as a tourist attraction of the Bieszczady.

CHOOSE YOUR ROUTE AND DISCOVER THE ATTRACTIONS OF THE BIESZCZADY

Immerse yourself in the magical world of Bieszczady nature by choosing one of two picturesque routes. The first, Majdan-Balnica-Majdan, runs along the Solinka stream. On this journey, you will pass a historic 19th-century bridge, the village of Żubracze, and the Hyrlata and Matragona massifs. Every kilometer of this route is an unforgettable story that reveals what to see in the Bieszczady. Choosing the second option, the Majdan-Dołżyca-Majdan route, you have the opportunity to take a break in the charming Cisna, which is an ideal base for hiking trips in the area. Cisna also tempts with excellent cuisine and the hospitality of local guesthouses. And for those who decide to continue the journey, the Bieszczady landscapes will reveal even more of their secrets.

To guarantee your place on this extraordinary journey, especially during the season when crowds of tourists seek Bieszczady attractions, we recommend purchasing tickets online. The first route is about a two-hour trip with a historic steam locomotive, while the second lasts a bit shorter (1h 20 min) and the carriages are pulled by a diesel locomotive.
