The Main Beskid Trail (Główny Szlak Beskidzki – GSB) is the longest marked hiking trail in Poland. Stretching for approximately 500 kilometres, it runs from Wołosate in the Bieszczady Mountains to Ustroń in the Silesian Beskids. Marked with red trail signs, it passes through the country's most beautiful Beskid ranges, offering an extraordinary variety of landscapes—from the vast alpine meadows of the Bieszczady and the peaceful forests of the Low Beskids to the scenic ridges of the Sądecki, Żywiecki and Silesian Beskids.
The idea of creating the Main Beskid Trail was born in the 1920s thanks to Kazimierz Sosnowski, a passionate mountaineer, educator and geographer. Today, the trail remains a symbol of Polish mountain hiking and attracts thousands of outdoor enthusiasts who choose to complete it either in one continuous journey or in shorter stages.
THE PODKARPACKIE SECTION OF THE MAIN BESKID TRAIL
The Podkarpackie section of the Main Beskid Trail begins in Wołosate and leads through the most spectacular parts of the Bieszczady Mountains and the Low Beskids. Along the way, hikers can enjoy pristine nature, breathtaking panoramic views and the rich cultural heritage of the region.
Among the highlights of this section are Tarnica, Połonina Caryńska, Połonina Wetlińska, the Duszatyn Lakes, Cergowa, the spa towns of Rymanów-Zdrój and Iwonicz-Zdrój, as well as Bieszczady National Park and Magura National Park. The trail also reveals the legacy of the Lemko and Boyko communities through historic wooden Orthodox churches, the remains of former churches and abandoned villages hidden among mountain valleys.
WHAT IS WORTH VISITING NEAR THE TRAIL?
The Main Beskid Trail offers much more than unforgettable mountain hikes. It is also an opportunity to discover some of the region's most fascinating cultural and natural attractions. Visitors should not miss Bieszczady National Park and its Natural History Museum, the Convent of the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth in Komańcza, the spa resorts of Rymanów-Zdrój and Iwonicz-Zdrój, as well as the Hermitage of St. John of Dukla.
Nature lovers will appreciate the mysterious Duszatyn Landslide Lakes, Cergowa with its panoramic observation tower, and the untouched wilderness of Magura National Park. Meanwhile, numerous wooden Orthodox churches, historic cemeteries and the remains of former Lemko and Boyko villages serve as lasting reminders of the rich history and multicultural heritage of the Podkarpackie region.
