HISTORY OF THE FORT – ONE OF THE TOURIST ATTRACTIONS
Fort XI "Duńkowiczki" is one of the best-preserved and most impressive structures of the Przemyśl Fortress. The history of this fascinating attraction dates back to the mid-19th century – from a field redoubt built in 1854, through a modern artillery fort, to advanced armored constructions from the early 20th century. Since 1902, the facility has been equipped with two three-gun traditors for 8 cm M.94 cannons in armored casemates, as well as four retractable-rotating M.2 armored turrets in the corners of the infantry rampart.
The fort took direct part in the fighting during the First Siege of the fortress, including repelling a direct Russian assault on October 7, 1914. It was shelled. Before the surrender in March 1915, the traditors, armored turrets, and caponiers were blown up. The structure was provisionally repaired by the Russians and recaptured by German and Austrian forces. From May 30 to June 2, 1915, it was subjected to shelling by the heaviest 42 cm mortars. The impact marks are still visible today.
In the interwar period, the remains of the retractable-rotating turrets, which had been tested for Polish defensive purposes, were dismantled. After World War II, the fort was heavily devastated, eventually becoming an open concrete monolith without protective walls. Partially secured at the turn of the 1970s and 1980s, it was adapted for use as a mushroom farm. It served this function until the first decade of the 21st century.
ATTRACTIONS OF THE SAN VALLEY – MODERN FATE OF FORT XI DUŃKOWICZKI
Between 2013 and 2015, a number of works were carried out to make the facility accessible for tourism. Vegetation was managed, moats were made accessible. Walls were cleaned and whitewashed, lighting was installed.
In 2024–2025, further extensive conservation and restoration-adaptation works were carried out. The left wing of the neck barracks was insulated, and the correct form of the artillery rampart was reconstructed – this allowed the introduction of Poland’s only scenographic-narrative exhibition about the history of the Przemyśl Fortress in the casemates of this part of the barracks. The proper form of the main postern and the traverse was reconstructed, and the left-side armored battery was recomposed (form clarified) – making Fort XI "Duńkowiczki" a tourist and educational “Gateway to the Przemyśl Fortress.”
INTERESTING PLACES IN POLAND – WHAT AWAITS VISITORS AT THE FORT
The left part of the fort’s neck barracks has been adapted into a modern narrative museum, which, through the use of realistically created scenography and multimedia installations, tells the story of peacetime, the development of the city of Przemyśl during the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, the construction of the Przemyśl Fortress, the bloody battles fought during the three sieges, and finally about what remains… battlefield archaeology and memorial sites… remembrance of fallen soldiers of many nationalities who served in the former empires.
Once a part of the mighty Przemyśl Fortress system, today a vibrant tourist, educational, and cultural center. Fort XI has lost its former defensive character, gaining a new role as a place for meetings, discovering history, and spending time together. It has also become an important military attraction of the Subcarpathian region. Here, you can learn about the fascinating history of one of the largest fortresses in Europe, take part in cultural events such as night tours or concerts, relax in a unique space, or participate in educational and community projects.
The facility is a unique testimony to history – it allows visitors to feel the atmosphere of past times and better understand the events that took place in this part of our country. It is an attraction in the San Valley worth paying attention to.
